For same-sex couples–do you wear rings or other symbols of love?

My wife and I wear both an engagement and wedding ring because we like sparklies. She also wears an “infinity” pendant I gave her. Today, a lesbian told us she wouldn’t do that, because it looks like we’re trying to imitate mixed-sex couples.

So, if you’re committed, do you wear rings or another symbol? If you’re not, what do you think of these symbols?
Just saw this on lesbian wedding rings.

We also both like saying “sparklies” better than “bling.” :-)

  1. I,m a lesbian and if I had a wife,I’d be proud to wear a ring.

  2. Me and my girl each have the half of a broken key that we each started wearing to symbolize our relationship since she accidently broke the key when she tried to flee into her house angrily when we had an argument. It’s so cheesy, but I like it.

  3. Sparklies?…lol
I bought my partner and I simple silver rings from Tiffany’s…I gave him the ring at dinner in the little blue box and the waitresses cried.

  4. My g/f and I wear diamond “promise’ rings, but already own wedding rings and will wait for the right time to marry. She also wears a garnet and silver ring, a pink saphire and diamond heart shaped necklace, diamond stud earrings, as well as several other pieces of good jewelry including the pearls I have her for christmas. She gave me two different diamond stud earrings.

We have plenty of good jewelry and frankly I couldn’t care less if its PC or not. We are women in our 50′s (well she is 49), and we deserve to have what we want. A ring means timeless devotion, and that’s how we feel about each other.

  5. a female friend of mine is a lesbian and she got a beautiful wedding ring for her lesbian lover whom she will get married to her in 2008.

  6. my secretary, at my accounting office, just showed off her beautiful engagement ring and she seems to be very much happy with her lesbian companion.

  7. No we don’t yet. We are looking at doing it next year. We are wearing the rings and yes they will be on our left hand but it in no way means we are doing the hetro thing.

We are not having a committment ceremony etc. We are going to buy the rings, go to the beach, say a few words to each other and slip the rings on. There is no meaning for anyone to it if they don’t want it to be. We are doing it to mean that we are committed to each other – it doesn’t matter what other people think of it.

  8. No, we just never got around to it….it’s been 20 years now…LOL

  9. No, we don’t. We had matching rings that were actually specially made for us, but hers got caught in the engine works of her SUV and mine slipped off and was ran over by horses. ABSOLUTELY TRUE STORIES…
I miss those rings…they were really pretty!
I still have the pieces of them, and I know we probably could have them repaired, but they just wouldn’t be the same.

They were a matched pair of platinum bands inset with a yellow gold vine that ended at the top, each end of the vine had one each of our birthstones.

  10. Oh yes, Dearest, Truckinotter and I bought a set of wedding bands when we first handfasted in 83. We had to have them re-sized a few years ago, and we talked about getting a newer set but I just couldn’t put the first set away…whimper whimper whimper….so we kept the older set. We often wear the same necklaces, but she’s not one for sparklies. I am. I love sparklies and she buys me lots of them, especially amber and blue moonstone. I’m saving now to buy her a diamond heart pendant, something she said a while ago she wanted and didn’t thing I heard…mwhahahahaha.
My wedding ring will be on my hand until it’s cremated with me and if it’s not, I’m coming back to find out why it wasn’t…I better get a good answer. *evil otter ghost grin*

  11. wow

  12. I would be proud to wear a ring that my girlfriend or wife gave me.

  13. Both me and my partner wear rings, as a symbol of our love and commitment. And if someone chooses to not do that, I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t feel like I am trying to mimic mixed-sex couples. I wear my ring because i love him and I am committed to him!.

  14. i’ve done that before. you as a couple have to decide what is right for you.

    Here’s one for ya…

    I married a Miss Right.
I just didn’t know her first name was Always.

  15. I don’t think its “imitating mixed-sex couples”. I think it has the same meaning for us as them- its a symbol of our commitment. And we can commit as well as (or better than) they can!!

As for me… My partner is transgender, so we are queer, but also viewed as hetero pretty often. He proposed with a traditional diamond engagement ring, which I wear on my left ring finger. I also have a promise ring he gave to me 6 months into our relationship that I wear on my right hand ring finger. The promise ring reminds me that I promised to be with him, and the engagement ring reminds me of the future we share together.

  16. yes my wife and i wear rings that we had made for us.
