Is it ok to wear my white prom dress as my wedding dress?

I’m looking at getting married in the near future and would like to know if I can wear my prom dress as my wedding dress. It still fits me nicely, and it an off-white color. It’s very pretty and everyone told me that it looked like I was getting married not going to prom. Please help me out! I don’t want to spend a lot of money on my wedding.
